Artist rendition of an original CS nose bag. The original artifact is double stitched canvas with hand-sewn eyelets and measure approx. 6 ½ inches wide at the bottom by 13 ½ to 14 inches in height. The original overhead rope was likely 3/8 to ½ inch hemp or manilla rope with one end plated into itself and the other tying into a slip knot on the other side. Another narrow 1/4 inch cord or rope was sewn into the top end of the bag as reinforcement.
The original artifact was used during the war by a member of the 1st Virginia cavalry so is likely a Clarksville Harness Shop or Richmond Arsenal "contractor" product.
