Frock coated Mississippi cavalryman: Published in the Confederate Calender (not sure what year) this photo has been identified by family members as that of an ancestor "volunteer Mississippi cavalryman". He wears a double breasted frock coat with pants having a dark stripe running down the leg, buff gauntlets and an artillery saber. His saddle is of the "Spanish" or maybe "half-Spanish" pattern with iron stirrups. Note the halter-bridle with running martingale and "Y" breast collar.
Comments: I always like this image a lot for the rakish appearance of the trooper and the equipment it displays. Note how his toes are placed in the stirrup. Ever wonder why their early iron stirrups were often so little? They did not run their feet in to the hilt!
