Pvt. James Secrest: Private Secrest was part of the infamous Jeff Davis Legion of Stuart's Cavalry, ANV. Several Mississippi cavalry companies were sent to Virginia early in the war. They were later brigaded with some Alabamians and Georgians and fought as the Jeff Davis Legion throughout the war. It is interesting to note his clothing and equipment. Frock coat with epaulettes, quarter strapped Texas saddle with wide stirrups, three buckle bridle, martingale, Federal saddle blanket and his carbine attached by a leather thong. The Jeff Davis Legion finished the war under Gen. Hampton fighting Sherman in the Carolinas.
