This McClellan pattern saddle is the one in which "Lee's boy-artillerist" John Pelham was riding when he was shot and killed at Kelly's Ford, Va., March 17th, 1863. The old silver plate on the cantle authenticates the history of this incredible artifact. Although likely an officer's saddle, its uncovered wood stirrups and leather treatment suggest the simplicity of CS military manufacture. This photo graciously provided by my friend Howard Crouch from his wonderful saddle book HORSE EQUIPMENT OF THE CIVIL WAR ERA. For those wishing to view a variety of wonderful artifacts I recommend the book highly.
