This Texas style saddle was made by the New Orleans firm of Horter and Fenner and is so marked on a brass disc on the near side. The saddle blanket, stirrups and girth are all part of the same grouping belonging to a member of Mosby's Rangers, Lt William Thomas Turner of Maryland. Brave and highly respected in the command Turner was killed in the January 1864 raid on Loudoun Heights near Harper's Ferry. Other artifact accompanied the collection including Turner's belt and cartridge box bearing brass ovals with the Maryland state seal, a holster and a .44 Colt revolver. For more photos of all I recommend the book HORSE EQUIPMENT OF THE CIVIL WAR ERA by my friend Howard Crouch who graciously provided these photos.
