Gen. Marcellus Stoval: The proud martial bearing of Confederate Brig. Gen. Marcellus A. Stovall is further expressed by his uniform and horse equipment. Stovall's saddle is a brass bound Grimily artillery or dragoon saddle complete with brass stirrups and his swallow tail saddle cloth appears to be enhanced with gold cloth or braid. A breast strap with running martingale is complimented by a high quality bridle headstall likely with brass hardware and rosettes, and an interesting though unfortunately a largely indistinguishable pattern of bit. General Stovall served faithfully albeit somewhat obscurely throughout the war in the Army of Tennessee. Comments: Recently found in a private collection, this is a very rare (only one I know of) war-time image of a mounted Confederate General.
