1st Mississippi Cavalry Group Photo: Company G, 1st Mississippi Cavalry. Surprisingly clear and wonderfully detailed, the cadre of arms, accoutrements, and horse equipment is astounding! Note the standard 1st Mississippi battle shirts, the wide variety of hats, the arms and the few accoutrements. As for horse equipment, note the C.S. Texas saddle with abbreviated skirt and open wooden stirrups, the halter bridle with leather halter strap and indiscernible bit (snaffle) with buckled on reins, the "Y" breast strap and Federal wool blanket. Sitting on the horse is Pvt. Alonzo Greer.
This regiment was recruited from several companies from different parts of the state and saw a lot of action under some of the west's most prominent leaders including at Belmont, Shiloh, Corinth, the Holly Springs raid under Gen. Van Dorn, The Vicksburg campaign under Wirt Adams, The Atlanta campaign under Wheeler, the Nashville campaign under Forrest, being all but destroyed at Selma and finally officially surrendering with Forrest at Gainesville, Ala. in May 1865. Comments: What a wonderful photo! My favorite of western cavalry! For more information on these type equipments order the book "Confederate Saddles and Horse Equipment" By Ken R. Knopp (see home page).
