The saddle above is in wonderful condition! It is a most likely a Richmond Arsenal McClellan as
noted by the classic "clipped corner" mortise plates and CS pommel shield. What makes it interesting is
the "artillery style" pattern pommel shield on this McClellan. One cannot be sure if it was intended at issue
as an artillery saddle or a cavalry saddle that was given the artillery shield as a result of a shortage of
cavalry pommel shields. Who knows? Other features one should note are the covered, square top wood
stirrups, large iron stirrup strap hangers and other hardware. It is doubtful that the girth and blanket straps
are original issue to the saddle. This saddle is housed in the Gettysburg National Park Service collection
and is often on display. Its provenance is not known. For more information about this pattern please
