Sgt. William Hood of Wheeler's Cavalry: Sgt. William Hood's photo was taken immediately after the war, possibly in Cartersville Ga. or some nearby town in his home area. Hood carried a Confederate Leech & Rigdon pistol with captured Federal holster which was passed down through the generations with this photo. In the photo, although reversed and difficult to see, he wears a straw or floppy "slouch" hat and a short waisted jacket with folded over and buttoned lapels and laid down collar. A saber is among his accoutrements with others apparently slung from his shoulder. Hood sits astride his war horse and a McClellan saddle with open wooden stirrups. Horse equipments include what appears to be a halter-bridle. Hood served in the 1st Georgia Cavalry under "Fighting Joe" Wheeler most of the war. He also fought under N.B. Forrest in the fall of 1863. He was wounded at least once and finished the war under Hampton in North Carolina.
